Casten Statement on GOP Energy Package

Washington, D.C. — U.S. Congressman Sean Casten (IL-06) released the following statement regarding H.R. 1, the Republican energy bill, which is expected to be considered by the House of Representatives this week:

“If you’re looking to pass legislation that prioritizes energy producers and raises the cost of energy, H.R. 1 accomplishes that goal,” said Rep. Sean Casten. “On the other hand, if you’re more concerned with helping American families who consume energy – whether that be heating their homes or filling up their gas tank – you’ll need to look elsewhere.

“As fossil fuel use continues to collapse, oil and gas companies have placed increasing pressure on my colleagues across the aisle to keep their industry afloat. We already subsidize the fossil fuel industry to the tune of $650 billion in direct and indirect costs every year. Now, House Republicans want to bolster the industry even further.

“H.R. 1 makes it easier to drill on federal lands. It makes it easier to export fossil fuels. It rolls back policies that give consumers access to cheaper, cleaner energy sources. All these things will, by design, raise the cost of energy for American consumers.

“This bill is anti-environmental, anti-consumer, and anti-market. It stands to hurt both American families and our planet. For anyone who prioritizes lowering costs and ensuring we pass a livable planet on to our children, I urge you to join me in voting no.”

Rep. Casten is available for interviews this week on HR 1.
